Factors That Can Cause Acne

Acne - Causing Factors

Acne problems are not cause by bad hygiene. It is cause by many internal and external factors. In fact, the real cause of acne is actually unknown.

Internal factors

  • Sebum – This is oil healthy to skin but when production of it goes out of control and too much, the pores get full and blocked.
  • Hormones- the androgens which is a male hormones that are present in both male and female but higher in males. This hormone enlarges the sebaceous glands in the skin and they cause glands to increase sebum production. Estrogen a female hormones, during monthly menstrual cycle is due to changes in the estrogen levels in the body, this is why acne in female get better and worse during menstruation.
  • Genetics– the tendency to develop acne runs in families. Fluctuations of hormone levels and production of substances in the body are regulated by genes in a complex system. Overview of which genes effective in the acne problem is not yet clear.

External factors

  • Bacteria – Propionibacterium acne (P. acne), bacterium mostly causing acne which is typically live in our skin and cause to acne. The presence of P. acne attracts white blood cells produce enzyme that causes inflammation and redness.
  • Improper skin care products – This include any products that block oil pores and causes skin irritation.
  • Over exposure to sun rays– this can cause damage on skin and worsening existing acne. Some acne medications can cause skin sensitivity to the sun lead to worse skin condition.
  • Picking and squeezing– picking pushes bacteria deeper into the skin cells, squeeze acne using fingers can cause acne to be serious. So, this is not recommended.
  • Washing face too often– too much washing can stimulate oil glands and make acne worse.

Blackheads and Whiteheads are known as comedones. Their difference from acne is the pus. Whiteheads is the infection that remains on top of the skin surface while Blackheads is an infection that got expose and was oxidized that cause it to appear black.

Treatment may vary depending on the type and severity of each case. Option range from over-the counter topical, to prescription drugs to physical treatment.
