BOILS: Nature and Treatment

A PBB housemate 2012 has been out from the “Bahay ni Kuya” for medication and returned after an hour of observation. It is a disease that most people from all sorts of life experiences. Well, the disease is known as Boil. Boil is an infection of the skin that begins as a reddened, tender area. Eventually, it becomes hard and tenderer. As the time goes by, the center of the boil softens and filled with pus – collection of  infection-fighting white blood cells from the blood stream which help in the eradication of the infection, bacteria and proteins which forms the head or locally known as “the eye”. Pus, enclosed in the tissues is known as abscess. Boil is an example of skin abscess. Boil is extremely contagious.

Boil is caused by Staphylocossus aureus, a bacterium which infects the hair follicles in the skin. Some caused by an ingrown hair. Others form when foreign materials clogged the skin. Some boils grown in the face known as cystic acne, which is formed when oils ducts become clogged and infected. Some boils also grows in the armpit which is known as Hidradenitis suppurativa, which is the inflammation and infection of the sweat glands. The most common of these is Pilonidal cyst which grows in buttocks which causes a discomfort feeling when sitting. This boil begins to grow in the hair follicles of the skin from tiny infections and latter become large through pressure of the area after a long time sitting.

When we are infected of this disease, pain from the area where it grown is not only felt. Sometimes, it comes with fever and chill. It can make you bedridden for almost two weeks or more depending on your medication. Some would entirely go for the doctor and ask for prescriptions of antibacterial. But to those who are financially problematic they are sorting to medicines which are just around their kitchen and houses.

In encountering this disease, the following important things should be done to make sure that the infection would not spread along the other family member of your home.
  • Do not puncture the boil with needle or pointed objects to relieve pressure. Puncturing may lead the abscess to the surrounding areas and would likely to result to infection.
  • Wash your hands with disinfectant soap before and after touching the infected area.
  • Towel, clothes and bed cover of the patient should not be used by the other members of the household. It should be washed immediately after use.
  • Use clean towels or cloths in washing the infected parts. It should be washed thoroughly after use.
  • Apply warm compress to the infected part. This will help in relieving discomfort of pain and itchiness
  • Proper hygiene should be observed by the family and the patient.
Boils could be treated at home in a less expenses way. Some are the things you could do in treating the boils which are open and draining:
  • Clean the surrounding of the infected area with clean cloth soaked in warm water and disinfectant soap.
  • Chop garlic and onion. Garlic is a natural antiseptic. Place some at the surrounding of the infected area. Organic onion is also a natural antibacterial and natural antiseptic. Chopped pieces and placed in the perimeter of the boil.
  • Cut some organic potato, placed it together with garlic and onion into boil and bandage.
  • When removing the bandage. It should be moistened first so that it will not cause pain.
A strong immune system would likely help the risk of getting infected and in the prevention of other infection. The patient should :
  • Eat green leafy vegetables and fruits that are rich in vitamins and minerals.
  • The patient should avoid caffeine, sugar, and processed food. By so, the patient could increase his or her immunity against boil and infection.
  • Always drink more water and have enough sleep
  • Have a check-up with your family doctor If the infection is accompanied with swelling of the infected area and fever.
